Digital video is the future. Facebook and Cisco agree that almost 80% of all mobile traffic is connected to video content. Humans want to consume it and businesses are going to have to have it to compete. Do you know what that means?
We are on the even of the video boom! That’s great, right!?! It means jobs, jobs and more jobs for video creators. So what is the problem? Well, if you are female the problem is that only 2% of videographers are women. There are not hard and fast numbers for editing, but the best guess is 15% – 20% of editors are female. So a booming industry is blossoming and women don’t have a real stake in it.
It is not for lack of interest. Girls show up for film classes and even continue into college, but somewhere before graduation females are handed cameras and told to go make documentaries and male students are handed cameras and told to go out and make a career.
What are the biggest obstacles:
- Women need to network like a man
- Women need more hands on experience and the opportunity to build a reel
- Women have to model what a woman in leading role looks like to male counterparts
- More girls need to see women behind the camera to even consider these male dominated jobs as an option
Why it matters? Behind the camera often shapes who is in front of the camera, hire the rest of the crew, and they edit the final production.
